Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules, but this won't address GERD issues from the peppermint tea. The tea will directly affect your stomach and upper GI. It's fantastic for relaxing the lower gut, but that same relaxation effect in the upper gut can definitely trigger heartburn in those who are prone to it.

Hi Karen - I am so sorry you experienced GERD after taking the Tummy Tamers.

When we developed the Tummy Tamers, we formulated them specifically for the special needs of people with IBS.

Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.

The Tummy Tamers capsules are enteric coated, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric coating is resistant to stomach acid.

In fact, we use fifty percent more than the industry standard amount of enteric coating on our Tummy Tamers, to allow as many people as possible to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Amazing Products!
I have suffered with GI problems for years and last year I finally decided to get tests done to see if anything major was wrong. Luckily nothing was found and I was diagnosed with IBS. It took me a full year after being diagnosed to do some research. I don't know if I was in denial or what but I was sick of being home all the time with fear of not having a bathroom close by. I purchased some Peppermint Oil pills and was amazed how they worked. I used them for a few weeks. I ended up getting this kit so I could try the other products too. I have a problem drinking the fennel tea, it's not something that tastes good to me but I really want to like it. The peppermint tea works almost instantly if I need it, thankfully it's rare I even need it. I just took a vacation and was so nervous about my stomach. I had 1 episode during the week which I admit, it wasn't a healthy eating week. I was able to have a couple adult beverages which is a miracle seeing as I gave up drinking alcohol a couple years ago. I just turned 30 so this is a great way to start a new chapter of my life. IBS had taken over my life and now I think I finally have my life back. Thank you Heather!

Returned peppermint caps.

Spoke to a woman on the phone that I was returning the peppermint caps. because they contained soy oil. She was very plesant and said that it was no problem and I could return them without a problem. I have mailed the caps. back and traced the package they were received on July2. I put a note in the package that I would like them replaced with the tummy fiber and am waiting to hear back at this point.

Most products were useful, but I don't have IBS...
Your customer service people are the best! I used the fennel tea and the peppermint tea. I have not tried the acacia fiber at all. The peppermint oil made my urine sting and irritated my esophagus, so I didn't use it. I read the book Stop IBS, but the cookbook isn't useful because I don't cook much. My alternative medical doctor thinks that stress had a big impact on my digestion. The whole episode eased off in a few weeks. Thanks for your help.

The healing capacity of ths tea is immediate, and for me certain.
This product is wonderful. When I develop acid reflux after I eat, I prepare the tea as quickly as possible. As soon as I sip the warm, soothing liquid my body relaxes, perhaps because the healing is immediate, perhaps because I know comfort is on its way. It works 98% of the time! Fantastic product
A few months past I ordered the Tummy Fiber Acacia Senegal can. I must say that I did have my doubts. I have IBS-C and along with the constipation, gas and bloating. I take 1 and a half teaspoons of the fiber twice a day. Not immediate results but gradually the bloating subsided. Still some gas but I am much more regular. I have tried many fiber products without any results and of course Miralax. This is the only product that I need now. My only criticism is that sometimes the fiber will clump up and not dissolve. Perhaps it is the humid summer that we are experiencing. No matter this product has helped me tremendously.

Hi Loretta - Thank you so much for your feedback. The fennel tea should not worsen GERD. If anything, it may help it a bit, though it is really best for bloating and gas.

I'd try either the fennel tea or the homeopathic tabs one at a time, so you will know which one is affecting you.

To try the tea again, drink as much as possible the first few days to really get on top of bloating and gas, Then you can drop down to a few cups a day and keep symptoms at bay.

If bloating/gas are not your main concerns let me know, as there may be other options that are a better fit for you than the fennel.

I'm sorry to hear that the fennel tea isn't working well for your symptoms. It does help at first to almost "overwhelm" your gut with the tea to really kick out the bloating and gas. Drink the tea constantly, all day long, the first several days until till you're just sick of it - that really does help get on top of the gas and bloating.

You can also try the peppermint oil capsules to help prevent the bloating and gas. Take these before a meal (ALWAYS on an empty stomach) as a preventative measure.

If you do decide that you don't like the fennel tea, you can certainly return it to us for a refund, even if it's been opened. There is no time limit for returns.

Heather's Tummy Fiber has made my life much better. I either have constipation or on occasion, diarrhea, which lowers my energy so much that I can't do anything that I need to do for a day or two. Now, when my gut feels like I might have diarrhea, I take 1/2 tsp. of Heather's Tummy Fiber, relax and in only a few minutes the feeling goes away, and my gut no longer feels like it is going to spasm. I've learned what works for me with the tummy fiber, I can take a teaspoon or so of it at night and in the morning, no more constipation. This is a huge improvement in my quality of life.

Hi Veona - I'm so sorry to hear this. It should very easy to get enough protein and still eat safely for IBS.

You have many different options: skinless white meat chicken or turkey breasts; any kind of seafood at all; egg whites or Egg Beaters; veggie substitutes for meats like veggie hot dogs or Garden Burgers; well cooked and chopped/pureed beans or lentils (add slowly and gradually to your diet); any kind of soy product; finely ground nuts added to a soluble fiber foundation.

If you need recipes ideas for how to incorporate these foods, or any more help at all, please just let us know.

I must be allergic to this product.

The first cup gave me immediate severe stomach cramping. The second cup taken with a full meal gave me a full blown headache upon consumption. Customer service offered to let me return for a refund but the cost of postage was more than the cost of the tea.

I am sorry that the peppermint oil capsules did not work as quickly as you had expected.

The capsules work best when taken on an empty stomach with as little water as possible to swallow it about an hour before eating, or 2 hours after eating. This way, the capsules can get all the way through the stomach before the coating dissolves, and the oil can coat the lining of your system. This should prevent abdominal cramping, spasms, bloating, and gas.

If you find that the peppermint capsules aren't working for you, you can return them for a refund. You might consider trying the Peppermint or Fennel teas as more immediate relief of symptoms.

Heartburn from Peppermint Oil Caps

This is the first product that I've tried from Heather's IBS. Unfortunately, it kicked off the worst heartburn I've had in years!! It's really thrown me into a state, and I'm still trying to resolve it. WARNING to people who have hiatal hernias: you can't take peppermint oil because it relaxes the sphincter in the diaphragm causing GERD/gastroesophageal reflux --heartburn. A WARNING should be put on this product for people with GERD or hiatal hernias. It does relax the smooth muscles in the colon and take away the pain of IBS, but one isn't looking to exchange one problem for another.

Hello Pamela,

I am so sorry you experienced bad heartburn after taking the Tummy Tamers.

When we developed the Tummy Tamers, we formulated them specifically for the special needs of people with IBS.

Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.

The Tummy Tamers capsules are enteric coated, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric coating is resistant to stomach acid.

In fact, we use fifty percent more than the industry standard amount of enteric coating on our Tummy Tamers, to allow as many people as possible to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

Of course if you are unable to take the peppermint oil capsules, please feel free to return them even if you have used part of the bottle. I am so pleased with these products; can't begin to tell you.
After suffering 6mo with acute colitis and IBS I came across Heather's products at our local Bartell drug store and within 4 days i was pain free, very little bloating, gas and no diarrhea. I will follow her diet recommendations and will never be without her products on hand. The only negative comment I have is the recipes call for so many different ingredients and some very expensive but I do understand eating this new way is going to cost more. this is the 2nd purchase here and it included everything i really needed. the first book and peppermint cas were not enough for me to understand everything. the cheat sheet said rice so I bought brown rice-huh- but only the book said white rice, so $35 of brown rice down the drain. The peppermint and fennel tea is delicious and relaxing. th acaci for soluable fiber and peppermint caps help a lot. Beware, tho that until you cut out ALL triggers you will get even worse. I tried to keep some sweets that included butter, which did not work. Sugar cookies with green sprinkles was a very bad idea. I have diarrhea with fecal incontinence-which no one knows why I have fecal incontinence except it began after abdominal cancer surgery 7 years ago. (I suspect it was something to do with removing all the omentum and putting my intestines back in a bit wrong). Read the book. do not think the cheat sheet goes you all you need to know. and elinimate everything she says asap. it only prolongs the physical and mental anguish if you do not. I wish I had found this before.

A delay like this is especially likely to happen when there are Customs fees due upon delivery. Sometimes orders will be held at the local post office, awaiting customer pick-up and payment of the Customs fees. This has actually happened in the past without the post office ever notifying the customer that their package was being held. So, you could check and see if your local post office does have the order for you. If things are held up in Customs, we just have to wait until they're finally processed through. All of their contact will be with you, so we never even know if Customs is holding a package until the customer passes this info along to us.

Heather, I have had IBS since I was in my twenties and now I am 68. I have been on Doxepin for IBS for over 33 years. I also have GERD, which is controlled with medicine. I must commend you on your product, Tummy Care capsules with peppermint. For the first time, for as long as I can remember, my bloating, cramping, and diarrhea relating to my IBS, are virtually gone. With the Tummy Teas you may have to drink many cups a day - just at first! - to almost "overwhelm" your system with the tea to really kick out the bloating and gas. Drink the tea till you're sick of it! Then you can drop down to a more reasonable amount.

If you decide the Tummy Tea or the Tummy Tamers are just not working for you, please feel free to return them for a full refund.

I do have some tips for using the caps if you'd like to try them, as they can be a little finicky.

Best Fiber Product I have ever used!!
I have suffered with IBS my whole life and have had to rely on fiber products that often produce painful gas and bloating. "Acacia Senegal-Tummy Fiber" never causes me any distress on top of what may already be painful. I put it in my morning protein shakes, mix it with vitamin water, put it in my yogurt, and even slip it into my kids' foods because they don't get enough fiber. They don't even know it's there! I've been using Heather's Acacia Powder for many years now.
It's so much better then Citrucil or Metamucil. I love that it's all natural and gluten free. I take 2 TBS. twice a day and it really helps keep me regular. When I order it thru Heather it almost always comes within a couple days. I have even gotten a couple of my daughters using it. It's really helped us regulate whether it's diarrhea or constipation. Life changing
Before Tummy Fiber, I couldn't eat out at all. Everything gave me what I call "Panic Diarrhea". Now I mix 1 tablespoon of Tummy Fiber with about 6 oz. of water two times per day and it has cleared up my IBS and has permitted me to enjoy going out to eat. Hi Susan - I'm so sorry to hear this. People tend to either love or hate the black licorice taste of fennel. It really does work well for gas and bloating though so many people just get creative about how to take it. You can brew it with another herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile to disguise the flavor (peppermint in particular completely kills the fennel taste).

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

If you still just hate it so much you can't even drink it, please feel feel to return it for a full refund.

Hi Nancy - I am so sorry to hear this. Can I ask your current dose? It's important with the Tummy Fiber to start with a low dose of about ½ packet (or ½ teaspoon) twice daily, and to gradually increase. You need to keep gradually increasing until the diarrhea resolves.

Tummy Fiber can't make diarrhea worse, but it won't likely help until you've gradually increased your dose a bit. On average, diarrhea takes 8-12 grams per day, for some people a bit more or less.

If you are unhappy you are welcome to return the product at any time for a full refund. If you have any other questions or concerns please let us know.

No problem with the product

My problems are with the delivery - hold up and cost in our customs. These 2 bags now cost me £50 (they used to cost me £25) and the last twice I have incurred £13 costs and I just cannot afford it anymore so will not be purchasing any more. Hello Judith,

I'm so sorry you were hit with an extra customs charge. Unfortunately, we have no control over this or even any advance knowledge of what kinds of duties/taxes will be charged on goods once they leave the US.

There is a solid reason for the sudden change in UK customs charges, however. For years we filled out customs forms with just the lowest possible value of the raw materials, not the retail purchase price, to hopefully help prevent our customers from being charged extra duties and customs taxes. The customs forms were filled out in a standardized format for all foreign orders, so the prices listed were the same across the board for all orders shipped out, regardless of the country of destination. A few months ago, we were contacted by a UK customs official who stated that we could no longer do that. The value of goods on customs forms to the UK had to state the exact value of the goods as listed on the invoices. We have complied with that request, so that is likely now affecting the duties charged to UK customers. We were not given any more details by the officer who contacted us, and when we tried to follow up and get more information we never received a reply.

I'm so sorry about this. Foreign orders are always a frustration for us, because shipping is so expensive, and orders can be delayed for weeks in customs, and then on top of it all the customs/duties fees are so unpredictable and inconsistent. We do hope to pick up an EU distributor sometime soon, which would solve a lot of these problems for our customers. Until then, we are struggling with finding good solutions to all these issues, especially for our UK customers.

I am so sorry you did not find the speed of delivery satisfactory. Normally orders to foreign countries take 3-7 business days. Sometimes, however, foreign orders are held up at Customs. It is very frustrating for us as well because it seems to be totally random as to whether Customs will hold an order and for how long. We have customers that order from us regularly for years without any complications and then out of the blue one of their packages will be detained for weeks on end.

It has been our experience that Customs can hold packages for 6-8 weeks sometimes. This doesn't happen to all packages, but occasionally especially with larger orders, it can happen. A delay like this is especially likely to happen when there are Customs fees due upon delivery. Sometimes orders will be held at the local post office, awaiting customer pick-up and payment of the Customs fees. This has actually happened in the past without the post office ever notifying the customer that their package was being held. So, you could check and see if your local post office does have the order for you. If things are held up in Customs, we just have to wait until they're finally processed through. All of their contact will be with you, so we never even know if Customs is holding a package until the customer passes this info along to us.

Hello Joy,

I am so sorry to hear this. It could be that you started with too high of a dose.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Good Morning, I've not opened or used the packets yet - have them ready for when we depart on our travels.....however, each day I use 1/2 a teaspoon from the large canister of Tummy Tamer while I'm at home.....I've come to rely on this product because it seems to have helped me greatly. The loose/liquid stools accompanied by cramps/sweats/nausea/residual discomfort has been "tamed". Things were most uncomfortable before and I frequently had to just lie down after a bathroom visit to allow my upset system to calm before continuing my day's activities. Now, I go without much thought - the urgency has not been solved and I still need to go twice usually before the day's activities and again in the afternoon - but now I have "shape" and hardly any discomfort at all. As our travels will be in places where things may be a bit primitive, these travel packets will be a life-saver for me - mitigating embarrassment and discomfort without having to use Imodium - a good product but 'gums' me up the other way!!! I am so sorry you are having trouble with the Techni Ice Hot/Cold Packs.

To use for the first time, scrunch the sheets between your hands for a minute or so while they're completely submerged in warm water (use a very large bowl or a sink), until the air bubbles have escaped. Then simply leave the sheets submerged in the water overnight. It's helpful to weigh down the sheets with a bowl so they stay completely under water. The cells will swell (the hot pack will look like a thick quilt) and be ready for repeated use. Re-hydration is occasionally necessary after repeated use, but it will only take about 30-60 minutes to re-hydrate a pack.

If you have any specific questions on how to fill them, heat them or freeze them, please let us know!
