Fails to fully dissolve
unlike the can version, the packet, even when using hot water, clots. after vigorous stirring at the beginning and then every 3 or 4 minutes, there white lumps attached to the fork and the side of the glass. i am terribly disappointed with the pouch acacia. i would like to return the two remaining bags, at my expense, and then order another can.

The cans and pouches are filled with the exact same acacia fiber. We actually package them at the same time, so you could get the same lot in a can as well as a pouch. It isn't the packaging that is making the difference here, it is the lot number.

The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

I've skimmed the book and find the principals helpful. However, I live alone and many of the recipes are for much larger families. Also I simply do better with "' 4 or 5" ingredient or less type of cookbooks.
I really found Heather's IBS Acacia fiber @ 1/2 tsp twice a day, the fennel and peppermint teas very helpful for getting relief. I had an acture attach, which may have been both IBS and gall bladder, In addition to Heather's above products I also did a gall bladder cleanse of juicing 1/3rd beet, 2 carrots and 1/2 cucumber once or twice a day. Anyway, I'm OK now. I plan to continue using the Heather's Acacia fiber @ 1/2 tsp twice a day and fennel tea, which I can get at my health food store @ Westwood Village shopping center, Seattle.

Hi Nancy - thank you so much for your feedback! You can actually easily halve most, if not all, of the recipes in Eating for IBS. They have all been tested both ways, and I typically do this myself as I'm usually only cooking for two people.

Many of the recipes were originally meant to make two servings, but for publication the publisher wanted an average of 4 servings per recipe, so I had to test doubling the smaller recipes.

If you want very simple, fast and easy recipes, there are a lot of them in the book but I also focused specifically on that for the Heather Cooks DVD, in response to reader requests. You can see the recipes for that here http://www.helpforibs.com/shop/books/hcooks.asp Those are literally recipes you can throw together in just 10 minutes in the kitchen, and I tried to focus on All-American options.

For Eating for IBS, though, in order to be comprehensive I tried to give the widest range possible with 175 recipes so there was something for everyone, from standard worknight fare to ethnic options to holiday special event meals.

This kit saved my life! I went through gallbladder removal, then a month later appendix removal, then the doctors thought I had ovarian cysts. Finally, a doctor recognized the symptoms as IBS. I'm taking Librax and Hydrocodone but have started with the fiber and peppermint capsules. The peppermint capsules are great during an attack. The fiber is easy to take and does not have a taste. Pepperment oil capsules, not helpful

Hi Barbara - thanks so much for your feedback. The fennel tea will work best for bloating if you "overwhelm" your gut with it the first few days. Drink as much as you can, all day long, for the first 2-3 days. That should get bloating under control and then you can drop down to a few cups per day.

The fiber will also help bloating as it gets constipation under control. Constipation does often require a higher dose range of the fiber, but you have to increase your dose gradually, so this can take some patience (which is easier to say than to live with, I know).

Typically people start with ½ teaspoon twice daily, and then add an extra ½ tsp to one of those doses every 4-5 days. Keep gradually increasing until constipation resolves. That may end up taking 3-5 tablespoons per day, but get there gradually. It's okay if this takes a few weeks or even months - a slow and steady increase is much more likely to work than trying to take too much, too quickly. The fiber is not a drug or a laxative, so it won't work overnight.

The pep caps are best for preventing IBS pain, spasms, and cramps. They have to be taken on an empty stomach, as they need to reach your intestines before they dissolve. I find them most helpful before meals, especially restaurant meals. Those can just be taken as needed. The fennel tea can also be taken as needed, but the Tummy Fiber really needs to be taken twice a day, every day, in order to increase to the dose you need and then to keep constipation at bay.

Rating is a 3 these days as I am having much trouble.
I have had IBS C for many years and now it is much worse. Dr says my age is a part of it, I'm 84, and I have very bad constipation daily. I try to follow the diet but am getting nowhere.My straining to have a bm caused palpitations for an hour one day, and nose bleeding on several occasions. I'm not able to take laxatives because of bad side effects, so I try walking but I'm stil in big trouble. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi Bette - what is your current daily dose of the acacia, and are you taking it twice daily? Constipation does require a gradual increase to a higher end of the dose range, which may be anywhere from 2 to 5 tablespoons per day total. You do need to reach those doses gradually, though.

I live in Canada and ordering from US is a little slow but I do have a contact in Ontario so probably will use them.

I liked the explanation and list of foods. The receipes were not to my liking. We do not eat many of the types of food presented. I have found substitues for the bad foods, such as gluten free and dairy free parducts in the stores. I would like to make a meatloaf using the good fats.

The product works!!!
I have not been diagnosed with IBS but started to have stomach issues when I did not eat a bland diet. I have had tests and so far nothing is wrong. It is very difficult however when you have to run to the ladies room a number of times during the day. I would say I have the symptoms of IBS-D. The first time I tried the fiber I took too much at once. I so wanted it to work. I then carefully took small amounts and gradually increased it to 1 tablespoon three times a day. It's great to be able to take a natural product and get away from the Imodium. I'm so sorry to hear this. The teas really do work well for pain, cramping, gas and bloating though so some people just get creative about how to take them. You can brew them with another herbal teas to disguise the flavor and even mix the fennel and peppermint tea together. The peppermint tea has a wonderful taste, to most, and will completely disguise the fennel tea taste.

Using honey as a sweetener really makes it taste better as well. And some folks simply brew it very strong, let it cool, and drink it quickly as they would a medicine.

You can also mix in soy, rice or almond milk to help cut the taste.

If you still just hate it so much you can't even drink it, please feel to return it for a full refund.

Sometimes it is helpful for people to try and "overwhelm" the bloating and gas with 6-7 cups a day for the first few days. Then they can drop back to a reasonable amount of a few cups a day to keep things under control.

If this does not work for her, please do return the tea for a refund.

I titered up more slowly since I tend to be very sensitive to everything. This product does really work for constipation dominant IBS. Hi Daria - For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may likely be 4-5 tablespoons a day).

If you get gas or bloating, that would mean you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks or even a few months to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

I was skeptical when beginning it, as it seemed to cause loose stools, but then I read some info on the forums about starting at a lower dose and that seemed to help. About a year and a half ago, I discovered your web site, and since his doctor pretty much gave up on anything except the Rx he gave him, decided to try the Peppermint Caps and late the fiber. Thanks to these products, his life totally changed in about a week. Since then, he has an incident once a month or less and is free to live his life, and instead of taking the med from 4x per day, he's down to 2 and will further reduce it to just once very soon. The Tummy Fiber should not cause constipation or diarrhea. Please make sure you start with a low dose and gradually increase by 1/2 teaspoon every 4-5 days. If you increase too quickly you will not see the results you are looking for.

You are correct, though, sudden and drastic changes to your diet can affect your bowel movements. Make sure you are eating plenty of soluble fiber and are staying away from the trigger foods. Also, insoluble fiber foods are important to your diet, but please make sure you are cooking, chopping, or pureeing the insoluble fiber foods and eating them with soluble fiber.

Wouldn't want to be without the tummy fiber

Helped more than anything else so far
I was diagnosed with IBS this past May, after 2 other doctors spent all of last year trying to figure out what was wrong. This doctor did the food sensitivity testing and I eliminated 27 foods. Then eliminated all the FODMAPS. Was eating massive amounts of vegetable to combat constipation. This caused a lot of cramping. Tried Metamucil and that really caused cramping. Luckily, a friend had given me Heather's book "The First Year IBS" and I came to this site and these products. They were delivered right away and so I could switch to the Acacia fiber. What a difference. Lessens rather than increases cramping. The tea and peppermint capsules also help, and following her diet advice has done more for me than all the eliminations. I am so very happy! All is not perfect, and it may never be, but I am not in despair any more.

Heather, I must be doing something wrong. Nine teaspoons doesn't seem enough but if I up it to twelve, it causes Direah. I can't seem to find the correct balance. The peppermint oil pills cause gerd unless I really space them out. Any suggestions?

Hello Jennifer,

I am so sorry you were getting indigestion from the Tummy Tamers. Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

On a related note, not being able to tolerate the enteric coated peppermint oil capsules because they are dissolving in the stomach and causing heartburn or peppermint burping might indicate low stomach acid. In naturopathic medicine, heartburn is often thought to be caused by low stomach acid which causes the undigested food to sit in the stomach too long and create pressure. It can also contribute to inadequately digested protein in the stomach. This can disrupt the digestive process downstream as well. If you followed the tips I listed above and still experienced heartburn, you might want to follow up with a provider to test your stomach acid levels. A naturopath or nutritionist would probably be the best type of provider to address this for you.

The other thing that can cause some people to have to difficulty using the peppermint oil capsules is a sensitivity to the natural compounds in peppermint such as salicylates. The peppermint oil is very concentrated and contains a higher amount of these natural compounds than you would consume in a cup of tea. People who have a sensitivity seem to experience burning in the intestines when they take the peppermint caps. It may come as a surprise because until the peppermint capsules, they've probably never noticed a sensitivity like this because they've honestly never consumed the compounds in this amount before.

I'm Canadian and I shipped the Tummy Fiber to my dad's USA vacation destination. I was concerned that the order might not arrive during his one week in the USA so I reached out to the customer service team at Heather's Tummy Care to inquire about the timing. I was super touched that I got a personal message back from Heather herself and I was really impressed with her customer service response. She ensured that my order arrived within the time window that it needed to and her message to me was full of genuine kindness and caring. One of the things that I like about Heather's Acacia Senegal fiber is that it's been tested for salicylates and it has been identified as low salicylate. This information is important to me because I have salicylate sensitivity. When I placed this order I was so happy that Heather finally had Tummy Fiber back in stock. Unfortunately when the order arrived I discovered that this first batch of fiber was milled to a finer consistency than it usually is and it's more difficult to dissolve in liquids. The letter that came with the order apologized for this situation and said that it would be a temporary change in the product. Given everything that Heather has had to go through this year in terms of sourcing this product, I feel that the altered consistency is a small sacrifice to have to deal with! I look forward to ordering more Tummy Fiber in the future, and I'm sure by then it will be back to its normal texture.
