I think this might be the answer to my problems!
This product is tasteless and does not turn into a gel. It is easy to drink. I started by using one quarter teaspoon before each meal. I am now at one teaspoon which seems to be the magic measurement for me. I have tried pills and powders and, so far, this one seems to consistently help me. I can now go back to eating my regular diet while being careful of any of my trigger foods. I am thankful.

Good, But Not Great
Tea made with the fennel teabags is much weaker than I thought it would be. I find myself using two teabags each time, which means I'm going through the tea very quickly. On an unexpected note, my urine smells like fennel all the time now, and I was quite alarmed before I realized what was causing it. I can't comment on the peppermint caps, because I haven't been using them long enough to see an effect. The non-recipe parts of the book were the most useful parts for me; as a vegetarian with a gluten sensitivity, most of the suggested recipes would wreak havoc on my system. I did really appreciate the science and the eating tips at the beginning of the book.

Hi Frank,

I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

6) A customer recently wrote us to say that he uses a Cuisinart Quick-Prep hand held blender to mix up his Tummy Fiber in just a few seconds.

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

Hi there,
I'm sorry that you've been having trouble finding the right dose of the acacia fiber. It can take a while to work up to the right dose for you, and it is different for each person.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

If you do decide that the Acacia Tummy Fiber isn't working for you, you can return it to us for a refund even if it's been opened.

I'm sorry to hear that the peppermint oil capsules arent' working well for your son.

The maximum dose on the capsules is 3 in a day, so if he can make it work in his schedule to do the 3rd one,that might help. They do need to be taken on an empty stomach, so about 2 hours after eating, or 15 minutes to an hour before eating.

The other thing I would recommend would be peppermint or fennel tea. Peppermint will help with pain and urgency, the fennel with bloating and gas. Or, any form of peppermint, like Altoids mints can help if tea isn't an option.

If you and your son decide that the peppermint capsules just aren't working, you can return them even if they've been opened for a refund.

I'm so sorry you had trouble with the delivery of your order. Normally orders to foreign countries take 3-7 business days. Sometimes, however, foreign orders are held up at Customs. It is very frustrating for us as well because it seems to be totally random as to whether Customs will hold an order and for how long. We have customers that order from us regularly for years without any complications and then out of the blue one of their packages will be detained for weeks on end.

Very disappointed
I have been taking Citrucel for abt 14yrs. But still having the Big D for abt 15 years . So I decided to try this Product hoping it would help. Even tho I was taking 4 Citracel a day. I started out with 1/2 tsp. after trying for a week this product made be very uncomfortable, cramps ,bloated & gas .... So gave up on this and when back to the old citrucel again. Really wish it would have work for me . But no luck. But am glad it works for some people.... Wish there was a miracle pill for this thing they call IBS!! Maybe someday.

Hi Joyce - I'm so sorry you're not feeling better. You may be someone who is extra sensitive to any change in your fiber. Your Citrucel was at a very low dose (4 tablets = 2 grams), so you may need to drop below that dose if you change to the Tummy Fiber.

Normally, people can start on ½ teaspoon twice daily (that would be 2 grams), but for people who are just extra sensitive, they may have to start at ¼ teaspoon twice daily. That should not cause any bloating or gas, it should just get your gut used to a change. You can then add an extra ¼ tsp to one of your daily doses every 4-5 days or so, and keep gradually increasing at that rate.

Diarrhea does tend to resolve at a lower end of the dose range, but I don't think 2 grams will be enough. On average, diarrhea takes 5-15 grams per day, more typically 10-12 grams per day.

If you're willing to start over at a lower dose, I would hope you see big improvements with no side effects. If you prefer to just return the Tummy Fiber for a full refund you are certainly welcome to, and I understand.

The fennel tea specifically targets bloating and gas associated with IBS, but won't do much for other IBS symptoms.
I'm not sure which specific "IBS problems" you're experiencing, but I would definitely recommend a good soluble fiber supplement like our Acacia Senegal Tummy Fiber. This will help with ALL symptoms of IBS. Including diarrhea and constipation.
You could also try peppermint tea for pain or urgency, or the peppermint oil capsules for preventing pain, cramping, bloating, gas, and urgency.

When I order the powder, it arrives always in a week or 9 days. This time I waited three weeks. I think this is not your fault, but maybe the delay was caused by the import office. Hi Judy - I'm so sorry you're having mixed results. Bloating seems to be the most difficult IBS symptom to manage. It can help to take 3 pep caps a day, every single day, for at least a week. If you have the Fennel Tummy Tea as well, which is specifically for bloating and gas, drink as many cups of tea per day for the first several days as possible. If you can 'overwhelm' your gut for the first few days that can help get on top of the bloating and gas.

Hi Rose - our products are always labeled with a pack date, lot code, and best by date. Sometimes that information is on the bottom of the cans, and sometimes it is lasered onto the sides of cans. If it is on the side, it is going to be in white and printed directly on the can. It will not be a separate sticker, so it will be less obvious.

The Jury is still out!
I have been taking the Tummy Fiber since before Christmas. My IBS changed to about every hour - not hard not soft and pretty small. As I encreased so did the gas. Yesterday I went back to Citrecil and even though I am still going frequently I don't have as much gas. I gradually encreased my Tummy Fiber by a half tsp every week and the more I took the more gas I had so I backed off which did no good. I am still on the program along with the CD's Help!!

I am sorry to hear that you aren't having good luck with the Acacia Senegal Tummy Fiber. It sounds like you did increase gradually, which is great. Some people are a little more sensitive to it, so you might consider starting low again and increasing just by 1/4 tsp or even 1/8 tsp until you see a resolving dose. If you do start to see increased gas and bloating, don't add any more fiber.

You could also try some good strong Fennel Tea. Fennel does wonders for gas and bloating, and provides some instant relief.

If you do decide not to take the Acacia fiber, you can return it to us for a refund. Include in the box your name, address, phone number, and your invoice number if you have it, and we'll process the return for you.

Speed of delivery even faster than needed. The fennel tea also delivers gut relief to me quickly, and this speed I welcome. Nothing else I do for relief acts as quickly. I have long felt that the postage fees are much too large a cost. They often represent a 1/3 increase in costs for purchases. With this order I took more initiative and talked to customer service. I found out that postage depends on the number of items ordered. However, after 3 items there are no increases in postage charges. This information needs to be given to your customers so that they can plan their puchases accordingly.

Caused me more pain

I'm so sorry if the recipes seem too easy - I really wanted this book to be accessible for everyone, whether they'd been cooking gourmet meals for years, or they had never boiled water in their life. That's why there are 175 recipes - I tried to be as comprehensive as possible, so there are all-American traditional favorites as well as exotic ethnic options.

If you find things too bland by all means increase the herbs and spices called for in the recipes. I tend to season things very generously, but if it's not enough for you please use more - in general, most all herbs and spices are digestive aids, so there is no need to eat bland food just because you have IBS. Foods should be delicious as well as safe for IBS!

Really felt a difference
I'm one of those customers that is guilty of NEVER reviewing products. However, I really felt like this tea deserve some major compliments. I started feeling weird in my tummy since last summer and I went to the doctor many times but he never took my stomach troubles seriously. Made me much worse!
I've tried this product in the past and believed that it caused diarrhea. But, thinking it was a fluke, I ordered it again to help with bloating and gas. I drank 2 cups in 2 days and had a bout of severe diarrhea with horrible gas following it. I will not be using this tea anymore - it is not safe for me!

Hi Karen - you can add the Tummy Fiber to any moist food or liquid, or cook with it. For liquids, just add to your glass first then add your beverage, stir and dissolve. You can also add it to bottled water, shake it up, and drink or take with you. Sprinkle on any wet food - hot cereals, guacamole, pastas, soups, sauces, dips, puddings, tuna salad, etc. For baking add 1 T fiber per cup of flour. For other cooking, whisk in 1 T fiber per cup of liquid. Hope this helps!

I use it once or twice a day when i have symptoms. It takes away the cramps and gas and a good amount of bloating. I also have the peppermint capsuls they work as well. Hi Farah - Thank you for your feedback. I'm so sorry your son has not yet seen improvements. IBS constipation can certainly take longer to resolve than diarrhea.

For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that he starts with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increases to a dose high enough to resolve constipation (which may be 4-5 tablespoons a day). If he gets gas or bloating, that would mean he increased his dose too quickly.

It can take several weeks to gradually increase up to the dose he'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately he can't rush this. Tummy Fiber is not a drug or a laxative so it won't work overnight.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep the gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

Hi Judie - Constipation does often require a higher dose range of the fiber, but you have to increase your dose gradually, so this can take some patience (which is easier to say than to live with, I know).

Typically people start with ½ teaspoon twice daily, and then add an extra ½ tsp to one of those doses every 4-5 days. Keep gradually increasing until constipation resolves. That may end up taking 3-5 tablespoons per day, but get there gradually. It's okay if this takes a few weeks or even months - a slow and steady increase is much more likely to work than trying to take too much, too quickly. The fiber is not a drug or a laxative, so it won't work overnight.

The pep caps are best for preventing IBS pain, spasms, and cramps. These should be really helpful for the stomachache issues. They have to be taken on an empty stomach, as they need to reach your intestines before they dissolve. I find them most helpful before meals. Those can just be taken as needed.

I am so sorry to hear that the Acacia did not agree with you. Some people are more sensitive to it, and need to start at a very low dose, 1/4 tsp. or even 1/8 tsp two times a day to start, until your body can become accustomed to the additional fiber.

Hi Kate - The Fennel tea does have a mild black licorice taste to it. If you're not too keen on the taste, try adding some sugar or honey to sweeten it a bit. Or, you can brew it with the Peppermint Tummy Tea, which will completely mask the taste of the fennel but still give you the benefits.

It really helps at first to drink as many cups of the fennel tea per day for the first few days as you can possibly manage. That will "overwhelm" your gut with fennel and help you get on top of the bloating and gas. Then you can drop down to a reasonable amount of a cup or two per day and keep bloating and gas in check.

Hi Kate - I'm so glad you like the pep caps! But, I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

I began taking 1/4 tsp twice a day ... I've been using this product for the past 2 weeks. I was thrilled when I didn't wake up with nausea from gas buildup during the night - still had the gas - but I developed cramping so I cut back to 1/4 tsp each day which does help but I still need the anti-spasmodic medicine Bentyl but not as much. I still experience 1/2 solid stool in pellet form and some solid and then diarrhea - I am keeping a food journal too but I don't think my system will ever return to normal again. This is my new normal. It's better and I am grateful for that. I also purchased the IBS cookbook which I read for dietary suggestions.

Hi Leslie - It's good that you have started the fiber at a low dose, but you need to gradually increase that dose in order to see any benefits. The purpose of starting low, increasing gradually, is to get your gut used to more fiber (fiber is literally indigestible).

¼ tsp is only ½ gram of fiber - that is not enough to get any benefits from. See if you can increase your dose to ½ tsp twice a day. After 4-5 days go to 1 tsp in the am, and still ½ tsp in the pm. After another 4-5 days make both doses 1 tsp. And continue to increase slowly but steadily from there.

The gradual increase should prevent gas and bloating. Getting your dose up high enough will help prevent the painful spasms from IBS.

Your Product is a miracle in a can
I have suffered from IBS problems since having radiation for Uterine cancer years ago. My GP just talked about watching what I eat, but seemed to take my condition too lightly. Hi Dolores - Thanks for your feedback! You are right, the Tummy Fiber dissolves best in room temperature liquids. But, if you want to use the fiber in hot or cold beverages, there is an easy trick for that. Just add the Tummy Fiber to your empty glass, then add only enough room temperature liquid to dissolve it. Once it is liquefied, you can add boiling hot or ice cold liquids to fill the glass and it will be fine.

Hi Pamela - I'm so sorry you are not having good results with the peppermint oil capsules.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent heartburn or stomach/throat discomfort from the peppermint oil:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.


4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

If you still have problems please don't hesitate to return the caps, opened or unopened, for a full refund. If pain is your major issue, you may have better results from the Peppermint Tummy Tea. It's not as powerful as the peppermint oil capsules, but you can take it on a full stomach, and it works more quickly than the caps (the caps are a better preventative).

I'm Canadian and I shipped the Tummy Fiber to my dad's USA vacation destination. I was concerned that the order might not arrive during his one week in the USA so I reached out to the customer service team at Heather's Tummy Care to inquire about the timing. I was super touched that I got a personal message back from Heather herself and I was really impressed with her customer service response. She ensured that my order arrived within the time window that it needed to and her message to me was full of genuine kindness and caring. One of the things that I like about Heather's Acacia Senegal fiber is that it's been tested for salicylates and it has been identified as low salicylate. This information is important to me because I have salicylate sensitivity. When I placed this order I was so happy that Heather finally had Tummy Fiber back in stock. Unfortunately when the order arrived I discovered that this first batch of fiber was milled to a finer consistency than it usually is and it's more difficult to dissolve in liquids. The letter that came with the order apologized for this situation and said that it would be a temporary change in the product. Given everything that Heather has had to go through this year in terms of sourcing this product, I feel that the altered consistency is a small sacrifice to have to deal with! I look forward to ordering more Tummy Fiber in the future, and I'm sure by then it will be back to its normal texture.
