12 years old and somewhat out of date.
No mention of possible Celiac disease nor wheat sensitivity causing IBS symptoms. I followed the IBS diet for about 5 days and got progressively worse. Only by doing research and eliminating wheat did I find some relief. Doctors are very ignorant about these conditions. I would recommend that the IBS book be updated to include wheat sensitivity.

Hi Anne - thank you for your feedback. Celiac is actually listed in the book (and on this website) as one of the disorders that has to be ruled out for a diagnosis of IBS. Gluten intolerance (celiac) is a separate issue from IBS, and Eating for IBS is not focused on celiac or gluten intolerance. You can combine both dietary issues if you need to, that's not super uncommon, but most people with IBS do not also have celiac. They are two different disorders.

The book does address the issue with whole wheat, due to the insoluble fiber in wheat bran, that comes up with IBS, and you'll notice that the recipes do not use whole wheat. The wheat bran/insoluble fiber issue is distinct from a true wheat intolerance or gluten sensitivity, however.

If the book doesn't fit your needs you are certainly welcome to return it.

I love the Tummy Tammers! I had already been using an enteric coated peppermint oil pill from Whole Foods, however, I like Heathers a lot more. These help out so much. I have very bad IBS and have had it from an early age. I am now 38 (female) and have tried almost everything under the sun. I take tummy tammers 3X a day (before breakfast, lunch and dinner)I also make sure to eat SOLUBLE fiber before each meal and it has helped tremendously! Believe it or not, I even have a miniature Twix or Kit Kat (Halloween size) candy bar every night before bed. Sometimes I wish I hadn't more more times out of most, I'm just fine. not sure yet whether this will help me
This is my 4th day of taking caps. I've taken 2 a day on an empty stomach - one when I get up in the morning and then another at some point in the day after I've waited two hours since my previous meal. I also wait at least an hour before eating again. I take with a few sips of cool water but I think I'm beginning to have discomfort in my throat. I hope heartburn isn't returning. How long does one have to wait after taking the pill before normal drinking? If I'm exercising or whatever, I like to drink a glass of water or other liquid.

If you would like to try the Tummy Tamers again, here are a few tips that may help:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

Thank you for your comments. When starting to take the Tummy Fiber, it is important to start with a low dose and gradually work your way up to a higer resolving dose. Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Instead of soy milk you can use oat, rice or almond milk instead.

Can you please let me know the specific ingredients you do not normally stock in your kitchen? We may be able to help you find some suggestions for simple alternatives.

There is a very wide range of recipes in the book - some are fancy enough for holiday dinner parties but many are fast and easy for quick meals. If there are ingredients you don't like you can probably simply omit them.

With the Tummy Fiber, you will need to give it a little more time to see some real results. Keep gradually increasing by 1/2 to 1 teaspoon every 4-5 days. Your resolving daily dose to reach will depend on whether you are prone to diarrhea or constipation. If you are prone to diarrhea you will most likely resolve at a daily dose of 1-3 Tablespoons a day. If you are prone to constipation you will need more and should resolve at a daily dose of 3-5 Tablespoons a day.

Please stick with it and let us know if you are still not getting relief in a few weeks. You should notice more and more results as you are gradually increasing your daily dose.

I would love to provide a review on the peppermint caps – I've suffered with an IBS-D episode for almost a year off and on and tried numerous prescriptions, change in diet etc…within 4 days of taking the peppermint caps, the pain, bloating and diarrhea has significantly decreased! I am so sorry about the delay in shipping to Canada. Have you received your order?

Your order shipped out on 7/11, and normally orders to foreign countries take 3-7 business days. Sometimes, however, foreign orders are held up at Customs. It is very frustrating for us as well because it seems to be totally random as to whether Customs will hold an order and for how long. We have customers that order from us regularly for years without any complications and then out of the blue one of their packages will be detained for weeks on end.

Unfortunately, the US Postal Service does not provide accurate tracking for international packages weighing less than 4 pounds. So when I track your package the information does not even show it has left the United States.

It has been our experience that Customs can hold packages for 6-8 weeks sometimes. This doesn't happen to all packages, but occasionally especially with larger orders, it can happen. A delay like this is especially likely to happen when there are Customs fees due upon delivery. Sometimes orders will be held at the local post office, awaiting customer pick-up and payment of the Customs fees. This has actually happened in the past without the post office ever notifying the customer that their package was being held.

If you have not received your package, you could check and see if your local post office does have the order for you. If things are held up in Customs, we just have to wait until they're finally processed through. All of their contact will be with you, so I never even know if Customs is holding a package until the customer passes this info along to me.

Again, I do apologize for the delay! Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.

A life saver!!!
Before I started using this product, I was chronically contipated for years! An enema was my best friend. (How sad) My doctors all told me to eat more fruits and vegetables, drink more water, and take a fiber supplement. Well, I don't need to tell you that it did very little to help. Peppermint is actually contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) Do not take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

If he is still unable to tolerate the caps, please return them to us (opened is fine) for a full refund.

And he may be one of those folks who just does better with high volatile oil teas, like the fennel, instead of the concentrated volatile oil in the caps. I love to use the caps as a preventative before meals, but if my stomach is full or I need immediate help I much prefer the teas!

She may be able to tolerate peppermint tea, which is not as strong as the concentrated oil in the peppermint caps. Or she may have to stick to soluble fiber foods and a soluble fiber supplement to help keep the spasms and cramps at bay. She could also try fennel tea, as that is an anti-spasmodic (though not as strong as peppermint) but it does not carry any risk of reflux.

Made a huge difference from my "doctors" recommendations
I have been on these products now for abut 2 weeks and although my diarrhea has not moved on to "formed" stool, now instead of going lumpy liquid 14 times a day, now I go 'trying to form" to "lava" only 3-4 times in the morning. Occasionally, someone might pay a little more or a little less than the actual shipping charge, but in the end we sometimes break even. We do not, nor do we want to, make a profit on shipping. We completely understand customers' frustrations with shipping prices, because they just keep going up. USPS has raised the prices for priority mail shipping twice in the last eighteen months. My only complaint with the product is that it doesn't dissolve instantly. I put it in both hot and cold liquid. Hot is better but it is lumpy in cold liquid. I also wish the travel packets held more as I have to take a heaping tablespoon morning and evening and the packets will only last about one week.

I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

6) A customer recently wrote us to say that he uses a Cuisinart Quick-Prep hand held blender to mix up his Tummy Fiber in just a few seconds.

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

Diabetes and IBS aren't a super common combination, so I wasn't able to address that too much in the book. I have tried to add information about the overlaps on the website instead.

Do make sure you're using a soluble fiber supplement. That will help control IBS symptoms and soluble fiber also stabilizes blood sugar levels, so it's good for diabetes as well.

If you are prone to heartburn/acid reflux you will want to wait a full hour before eating or drinking anything. I know this can be tough sometimes, but it will really help to make sure the Tummy Tamer does not get stuck in your stomach.

You will know if the Tummy Tamer is stuck in your stomach because you will taste peppermint in the back of your throat.

Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

I wanted to be sure I put up a review for Heather's Tummy Fiber, because ever since I found their web site all those years ago, Heather and her products gave me back my life. Doctors were of absolutely NO HELP! They don't care about it, they think it's just in our heads, and offered no help. Lots of useless tests of course, but no help. Well, I'm here to tell you, it's not in your head, it's real. I was lucky, although I've suffered with IBS for decades, I only needed the Tummy Fiber to set my life back on course. That and everything she writes about IBS. She explained it all! I've taken that fiber every day of my life for 11 years, and it makes all the difference in the world. You have to try different amounts, along with a balanced diet, to see what works best for you, but after you find your sweet spot, you should be pretty much good to go. So wonderful to be able to travel again, so good to be able to eat out and not fear needing a restroom, desperately 30 minutes after you eat. I know every available bathroom in town. I once tried to quit taking Heather's Fiber, and switched to one of the fiber solutions sold in the grocery stores, just for convenience! It took about 10 days, but the symptoms came roaring back. Won't be making that mistake again. I have tried to get local places in Austin to carry it, but can't get any interest (just like with doctors) So frustrating. Trust this product, it is worth EVERY penny, and worth ordering online-if you can't get it in your town. I was delighted to see that the tea bags are indeed as generous as advertized. I have gotten two cups of tea for each bag I have used so far and the second cups were just as effective as the first cups. I have only used them when I was home or at my "vacation home" as normal strength ones have relieved my cramping but not for very long. I was afraid the dose would be too strong for my digestion. I don't want my motility to be adversely affected when in my diarrhea phase of Alternating form IBS, so don't use it much then. I'd suggest you try it.

Not sure it helps my constipation!

Hi Christine - the caps are meant to be taken one at a time, up to three times daily. Having said that, I know we do have some customers who take two at a time. The tolerance for peppermint oil varies a lot from person to person - some folks can tolerate a very high amount that would give other people heartburn/reflux.

Can I ask what dose you started with and what dose you worked up to? It can take starting slowly, gradually increasing, and reaching a dose high enough for your symptoms to see the best results. Sometimes that takes just a week or so but for higher doses it can take several weeks to gradually get there.

I dont know what this product does but I can say that IT WORKS! I used it for the first time while on vacation. We ate out every night of the week while we were away. I always have stomach issues when eating out at restaurants but I literally had not one IBS symptom the whole week! I mixed the travel packs in with my drink before I ate dinner and drank a couple glasses of the peppermint tummy tea throughout the day. Hi Alta - I'm so sorry you're not happy with the peppermint caps. Is it a hearburn/reflux issue you are having with them?

Peppermint is actually contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we use 50% more enteric coating than the industry standard because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening.

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people (I'm actually one of them) who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they'll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.


4) You shouldn't take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

If you are still unable to tolerate the caps, please return them to us (opened is fine) for a full refund.

And you may be one of those folks who just does better with high volatile oil teas, like the fennel, instead of the concentrated volatile oil in the caps. I love to use the caps as a preventative before meals, but if my stomach is full or I need immediate help I much prefer the teas!
