Hi there,
I'm sorry that you've been having trouble finding the right dose of the acacia fiber. It can take a while to work up to the right dose for you, and it is different for each person.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Very disappointed

I have been taking Citrucel for abt 14yrs. But still having the Big D for abt 15 years . So I decided to try this Product hoping it would help. Even tho I was taking 4 Citracel a day. I started out with 1/2 tsp. after trying for a week this product made be very uncomfortable, cramps ,bloated & gas .... So gave up on this and when back to the old citrucel again. Really wish it would have work for me . But no luck. But am glad it works for some people.... Wish there was a miracle pill for this thing they call IBS!! Maybe someday.

Hi Joyce - I'm so sorry you're not feeling better. You may be someone who is extra sensitive to any change in your fiber. Your Citrucel was at a very low dose (4 tablets = 2 grams), so you may need to drop below that dose if you change to the Tummy Fiber.

Normally, people can start on ½ teaspoon twice daily (that would be 2 grams), but for people who are just extra sensitive, they may have to start at ¼ teaspoon twice daily. That should not cause any bloating or gas, it should just get your gut used to a change. You can then add an extra ¼ tsp to one of your daily doses every 4-5 days or so, and keep gradually increasing at that rate.

Diarrhea does tend to resolve at a lower end of the dose range, but I don't think 2 grams will be enough. On average, diarrhea takes 5-15 grams per day, more typically 10-12 grams per day.

If you're willing to start over at a lower dose, I would hope you see big improvements with no side effects. If you prefer to just return the Tummy Fiber for a full refund you are certainly welcome to, and I understand.

about speed of delivery

When I order the powder, it arrives always in a week or 9 days. This time I waited three weeks. I think this is not your fault, but maybe the delay was caused by the import office. I could not see at the packet that it was there nevertheless. I never ordered two ones till now, that may be the reason.

Hi Helen,

I am so sorry your package took so long to be delivered to you in Israel.

It has been our experience that Customs can hold packages for 6-8 weeks sometimes and unfortunately that is beyond our control. This doesn't happen to all packages, but occasionally, especially with larger orders, it can happen. A delay like this is especially likely to happen when there are Customs fees due upon delivery. Sometimes orders will be held at the local post office, awaiting customer pick-up and payment of the Customs fees. This has actually happened in the past without the post office ever notifying the customer that their package was being held.

The Jury is still out!

I have been taking the Tummy Fiber since before Christmas. My IBS changed to about every hour - not hard not soft and pretty small. As I encreased so did the gas. Yesterday I went back to Citrecil and even though I am still going frequently I don't have as much gas. I gradually encreased my Tummy Fiber by a half tsp every week and the more I took the more gas I had so I backed off which did no good. I am still on the program along with the CD's Help!!

I am sorry to hear that you aren't having good luck with the Acacia Senegal Tummy Fiber. It sounds like you did increase gradually, which is great. Some people are a little more sensitive to it, so you might consider starting low again and increasing just by 1/4 tsp or even 1/8 tsp until you see a resolving dose. If you do start to see increased gas and bloating, don't add any more fiber.

You could also try some good strong Fennel Tea. Fennel does wonders for gas and bloating, and provides some instant relief.

If you do decide not to take the Acacia fiber, you can return it to us for a refund. Include in the box your name, address, phone number, and your invoice number if you have it, and we'll process the return for you.

Hi Karen - you can add the Tummy Fiber to any moist food or liquid, or cook with it. For liquids, just add to your glass first then add your beverage, stir and dissolve. You can also add it to bottled water, shake it up, and drink or take with you. Sprinkle on any wet food - hot cereals, guacamole, pastas, soups, sauces, dips, puddings, tuna salad, etc. For baking add 1 T fiber per cup of flour. For other cooking, whisk in 1 T fiber per cup of liquid. Hope this helps!

Before using your recipes and acacia, I was following 'Great Taste, No Pain' recipes which are just the opposite of yours. The only thing that concerns me is not eating fresh, raw fruit and vegetables which I miss. Other than that I'm pleased with the results.

This product actually works and works quickly.
I use it once or twice a day when i have symptoms. It takes away the cramps and gas and a good amount of bloating. I also have the peppermint capsuls they work as well. Purchaed your product throug Amazon i think. I have followed the rules eat soluable first and tha is working. My question is I am tryin to diet and don't quite know how to balance the "white carbs" if you will. Eating them as the most part of my meal is a little concerning for weight loss. Acacia powder is the best, but shipping is too high.

Opinion

I began taking 1/4 tsp twice a day ... I've been using this product for the past 2 weeks. I was thrilled when I didn't wake up with nausea from gas buildup during the night - still had the gas - but I developed cramping so I cut back to 1/4 tsp each day which does help but I still need the anti-spasmodic medicine Bentyl but not as much. I still experience 1/2 solid stool in pellet form and some solid and then diarrhea - I am keeping a food journal too but I don't think my system will ever return to normal again. This is my new normal. It's better and I am grateful for that. I also purchased the IBS cookbook which I read for dietary suggestions.

Hi Leslie - It's good that you have started the fiber at a low dose, but you need to gradually increase that dose in order to see any benefits. The purpose of starting low, increasing gradually, is to get your gut used to more fiber (fiber is literally indigestible).

¼ tsp is only ½ gram of fiber - that is not enough to get any benefits from. See if you can increase your dose to ½ tsp twice a day. After 4-5 days go to 1 tsp in the am, and still ½ tsp in the pm. After another 4-5 days make both doses 1 tsp. And continue to increase slowly but steadily from there.

The gradual increase should prevent gas and bloating. Getting your dose up high enough will help prevent the painful spasms from IBS.

Hi Dolores - Thanks for your feedback! You are right, the Tummy Fiber dissolves best in room temperature liquids. But, if you want to use the fiber in hot or cold beverages, there is an easy trick for that. Just add the Tummy Fiber to your empty glass, then add only enough room temperature liquid to dissolve it. Once it is liquefied, you can add boiling hot or ice cold liquids to fill the glass and it will be fine.

Your Product is a miracle in a can
I have suffered from IBS problems since having radiation for Uterine cancer years ago. My GP just talked about watching what I eat, but seemed to take my condition too lightly. One day I decided to check on the Internet to see if I could find something that would apply to my condition. I found Heather's website and to my delight found all the information I needed. Suffice to say, my IBS is very manageable now, and I can eat most foods with no problem. Chocolate is the exception which is an istant trigger to trouble! I use the fiber, peppermint caps and tea and now mu daughter is using them. They have helped a whole lot. I can only use the fiber for 5 or 6 weeks then have to switch to something else for 5 or 6 weeks then can go back. Everything I use stops working after that amount of time. The girl at your business says to use more but it's too expensive for that so I didn't try it. I pretty much quit drinking coffe and drink your tea all the time. I find I can get several cups out of one tea bag. I love it. I'm so happy I found your products.

Hi Evadna - I'm so sorry for the delay with your order. Our database shows you ordered on 1/9 and your order shipped on 1/10, so I don't know why there was a delay with receiving the items. Normally priority mail takes 2-5 days.

Please do continue with the hypnotherapy program. For some people it takes the full 100 days to see results, especially if your IBS has been severe and chronic for a long time. But if you follow the entire program the odds are very high it will help you tremendously.

For the Tummy Fiber, make sure you have started with a low dose of just ½ teaspoon twice daily, but that you continue to gradually increase your dose. Diarrhea can take 1-3 tablespoons per day to resolve, and constipation can take 3-5 tablespoons per day. But it can take some time to gradually get your doses up to these levels, and it does take some patience. I hate asking people with IBS to wait and go gradually, but the fiber really does work best if you take it slow and steady, and continue to gradually increase.

Amazing Product that works GREAT!!!!!
I had a small bowel resection in 2008 due to blood clots in my mesenteric arteries. Due to scar tissue and adhesions from that surgery, I developed a bowel obstruction in December 2012. I was advised by a dietitian to avoid foods that are high in insolubl fiber. Since I have a sister with colon cancer, I was also advised to get plenty of fiber each day. After lots of confusion and frustration, I found the answer for both issues. Heather's Tummy Fiber has the soluble fiber that will help keep my colon healthy while also not causing issues with the bowel obstruction. so far, it isn't helping too much with my chronic diarrhea?
I have short bowel syndrome which causes chronic diarrhea, so I thought maybe this would help, but I am not sure how much I should take? I am so grateful for this product and the book The First Year. Because I live alone I stopped making salads and cooking vegetables not realizing that V-8 juice was not the same. I thought I could no longer eat raw fruits and vegetables and this made my diarrhea worse. I have also had a colon resection due to colon cancer. I never knew there were two kinds of fiber and that soluble fiber was essential for me and neither did my doctors. Excellent results for my now 99 year old mom.

My mom has been in and out of the hospital with IBS type symptoms (ing nurse mentioned your product and how it had been helping her elderly mother, we ordered it right away. The results have been fantastic. She has occasional diarrhea but only because she eats too much chocolate and NOTHING like the problems before. We also started her on the Peppermint Oil capsules. She used to complained of pain in her stomach and we could not figure out why it hurt.. SInce she has been taking the capsules she no longer complains. Worked for me when nothing else did.
I've had diahrrea for 6-8 weeks. Dr gave me Lomotil and 2 antibiotics. No improvement. Your acacia fiber worked for me in two days. I am now making sure to drink two large glasses of water with fiber every day, and it's much better. (Still need a colonoscopy, after the first of the year.)

Acai Tummy Fiber
I've been taking a fiber and herb supplement for years, (it's only intended for short-term use), because it was the only thing I found that kept me regular. I stopped these supplements as soon as I began the acai fiber. The acai powder has been working great and produces consistent results. Excellent product. Easier when sprinkled over food because doesn't mix well in liquids, but stirring with a fork rather than a spoon definitely helps.

Tummy troubles

Heather, you have been a godsend!
Thirteen months ago, I was in the hospital in Chelsea, MI for 11 days. I had taken my Acacia Fiber with me, which was confiscated, and then doled out to me twice a day by the nursing staff. Upon hearing it was to help control IBS, a few of the nurses became quite interested, as THEY suffer from IBS. I found myself to be quite the IBS guru. Being employed in the medical profession, of course they were taking prescription drugs to treat their IBS. I lent First Year IBS to two of them for a day. My advice is to try this. It works!
I was diagnosed with IBS about 6 months ago. Multiple problems. I was prescribed meds and other OTC additives, with no real relief. I switched to the Tummy Fiber and Peppermint Oil tablets only. I have had no major problems since doing this.

The fiber and teas are working well for me.

Hi there,
I am sorry to hear that you were less than satisfied with the Acacia Tummy Fiber. It can take a while to work up to the right dose, and it is important to start at a low dose and gradually increase. It is not something that will work overnight.
Depending on your symptoms, you may need to take a higher dose of the acacia than you are taking right now.
Typically, people with diarrhea symptoms see a resolving dose anywhere from 1-3 Tablespoons per day, and constipation usually requires more than that- anywhere from 3-5 Tablespoons.

I've been using your products for several years and have been completely satisfied.
I take a T. in juice or tea before every meal. I mix it up in a insulated mug when going places. My doctor also has me mixing a probiotic with it. This plus taking Pancreaze before each meal. I've suffered with IBS-D almost all my life alternating with IBS-C. Sometimes I've gone months and years with out an episode and then something would set me off. Usually fresh fruits and vegetables plus stress. Still have to be careful what I eat...not fresh fruits and vegetables, watch my fats, etc.....getting plenty of rest. Getting tired seems to be a factor. When I had my gallbladder out about 14 years ago my IBS has been harder to maintain. I had taken Metamucil for years, switched to Citrucil, before finding your product online. I've used your fiber, teas, and your book. Right now I'm doing better than I have in two years. I've only had two episodes this month. Not sure what caused them. Oh, yes. I have used the hypnosis cd (3 times)...I forget the name...Dr. Michael seems to ring a bell. I'm 77 years old so I tend to forget some things. All in all I'm doing better.....as long as I take my meds, watch my diet, and stress level. Thanks for all your help. Sincerely, Marilyn

As the directions show, I started with a small quantity, 1/2 teaspoon twice a day and have gradually worked up to 1 teaspoon twice a day. I am still having a lot of problems, especially with excessive gas, so am I using too much or too little? I am going to give it another 4 weeks. If I don't see much improvement, I will return the other two unopened packages. I am also using the peppermint oil once a day at lunch time.

Hi there,

Soluble fiber supplements (like Acacia Tummy Fiber) can work wonders for constipation, yes. But they are NOT an overnight solution, and they're definitely not drugs. It makes a great deal of difference how you take a soluble fiber supplement, and it's well worth the time and effort to do it right.

First of all, these are the best ways to NOT get the results you want from a soluble fiber supplement:

* Try one at a low dose for a few days, then give up because there's no change.

* Go from zero to the maximum dose in one week flat, then give up because it's not working and now you're all bloated and gassy as well.

* Start taking one at the same time you stop taking laxatives, enemas, or colon cleanses you've been using regularly, then give up because your constipation is suddenly worse, not better.

The cardinal rule with a soluble fiber supplement (SFS) is to start at a low dose (for Acacia, just 1/2 a level measuring teaspoon, twice daily), and increase gradually. Constipation often requires a much higher daily dose of a SFS than diarrhea, and it can take several weeks, or even a few months, to slowly work your way up to the maximum daily dose. SFS are not laxatives, and they will not give "overnight relief", so taking a low dose of one for a few days will not alleviate your symptoms. What it will do is begin to acclimate your gut to a higher daily dose of fiber, and this is the goal. Don't give up as soon as you start - just realize that using a SFS is a slow, steady process. You will see improvements along the way.

It's tempting to think that if you need to reach the maximum dose to see the best results, you can just force your body to adjust to a high dose as fast as possible. After all, if your constipation will resolve on a SFS dose of, say, 25 grams a day, and it might typically take someone, say, 8 weeks to reach that dose, you'll be way ahead of the game if you race your way up to that dose in your very first week - right? Nope - wrong.

By definition, if you have IBS, you do not have a normally functioning gut. No matter how your IBS symptoms manifest (constipation or diarrhea, bloating or pain) your GI tract - and specifically, your gastrocolic reflex - is hyper-reactive to normal stimuli. Your goal should always be to keep your gastrocolic reflex stable so you can soothe and regulate your gut function.

Suddenly overloading your bowel with a fiber dose that is possibly ten times what you were taking before you started a SFS will do nothing but give you bloating and gas, as your GI tract struggles to deal with all of this unexpected fiber. Fiber is, after all, an undigestible carbohydrate, and your body needs to work to process it through your digestive tract.

Asking your gut to go from no soluble fiber supplement to a maximum daily dose too quickly is like trying to become a marathon runner by sprinting as hard and as fast as you can without rest. It won't work, you'll be frustrated, and you'll give up. Instead, go slowly, increase your dose gradually, and give your body the time and gentle approach it needs to adjust to the SFS increase. You can't beat your colon into submission with IBS, you need to kindly, patiently, and consistently coax it into normal motility. A SFS can help do this for you if you give it a fair chance.
