Hello Bonnie,

Thank you for your comments. When starting to take the Tummy Fiber, it is important to start with a low dose and gradually work your way up to a higer resolving dose. Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

I am so sorry about the delay in shipping to Canada. Have you received your order?

Your order shipped out on 7/11, and normally orders to foreign countries take 3-7 business days. Sometimes, however, foreign orders are held up at Customs. It is very frustrating for us as well because it seems to be totally random as to whether Customs will hold an order and for how long. We have customers that order from us regularly for years without any complications and then out of the blue one of their packages will be detained for weeks on end.

Unfortunately, the US Postal Service does not provide accurate tracking for international packages weighing less than 4 pounds. So when I track your package the information does not even show it has left the United States.

It has been our experience that Customs can hold packages for 6-8 weeks sometimes. This doesn't happen to all packages, but occasionally especially with larger orders, it can happen. A delay like this is especially likely to happen when there are Customs fees due upon delivery. Sometimes orders will be held at the local post office, awaiting customer pick-up and payment of the Customs fees. This has actually happened in the past without the post office ever notifying the customer that their package was being held.

If you have not received your package, you could check and see if your local post office does have the order for you. If things are held up in Customs, we just have to wait until they're finally processed through. All of their contact will be with you, so I never even know if Customs is holding a package until the customer passes this info along to me.

Again, I do apologize for the delay! Please let us know if there is anything else we can do.

easy fiber

Our shipping rates are based on the average cost to ship when we examined 6 months of order history. Occasionally, someone might pay a little more or a little less than the actual shipping charge, but in the end we sometimes break even. We do not, nor do we want to, make a profit on shipping. We completely understand customers' frustrations with shipping prices, because they just keep going up. USPS has raised the prices for priority mail shipping twice in the last eighteen months. This means we have to keep increasing our shipping prices as well. It is simply not feasible to charge customers the actual shipping cost for each order. There are too many variations in flat rate versus variable rate packaging, size, and weight issues. Well nedless to say I have taken metamucil, yuck! plus it gives you gas and has additives that I don't like. My only complaint with the product is that it doesn't dissolve instantly. I put it in both hot and cold liquid. Hot is better but it is lumpy in cold liquid. I also wish the travel packets held more as I have to take a heaping tablespoon morning and evening and the packets will only last about one week.

Hello Helen,

I'm so sorry you're having difficulty getting the Tummy Fiber to dissolve. The Tummy Fiber is certified organic, all natural gum of the acacia tree - also known as gum arabic. We have actually sourced the exact same organic Acacia Senegal grade from the same supplier from the time our company was founded. It is collected much like maple syrup, though the gum is more a solid than a liquid. They are amber colored, crystal-like pieces; these pieces are what the acacia gum looks like when it is collected from the outside of the tree. The gum is then dissolved in water, filtered, and the liquid is sprayed onto very large heated surfaces to sterilize the fiber and so the water can evaporate. What's left after the water evaporates is the fine, white powder that is acacia fiber.

There are no chemicals used in processing the acacia, and every step from the orchards to the processing to our packaging facility is certified organic. Because this is a natural gum with nothing added, and not a synthetic product that is highly processed, the grain size of the finished powder can vary from lot to lot, and even within a single lot. Even though we have specs in place for the grain size to be consistent and the optimum granularity for dissolving easily in liquids, during the packaging process the conveying and vibrating activities can sometimes separate out larger grains of the gum. This can result in a handful of finished packages of Tummy Fiber that have larger or more irregular grain sizes, which can then take longer to dissolve in liquids.

I'm including a list of tips we've come up with over the years to help fully dissolve the acacia in liquids or moist foods.

TIPS TO DISSOLVE TUMMY FIBER

1) It works best if the liquid temperature is cool or lukewarm, not very cold or boiling hot

2) Add Tummy Fiber to an empty cup, mix it with add just enough liquid to dissolve it, then add the remaining liquid

3) Stir with a fork instead of a spoon

4) After stirring initially, let it sit for about 60 seconds, then stir again and any remaining lumps should dissolve

5) Sprinkle on moist foods while stirring it in instead of adding a big spoonful all at once

6) A customer recently wrote us to say that he uses a Cuisinart Quick-Prep hand held blender to mix up his Tummy Fiber in just a few seconds.

If you are still unable to use the Tummy Fiber and are at all unhappy, please let us know and we will replace or refund the product.

Thank you for taking the time to review the product.

If you are prone to heartburn/acid reflux you will want to wait a full hour before eating or drinking anything. I know this can be tough sometimes, but it will really help to make sure the Tummy Tamer does not get stuck in your stomach.

You will know if the Tummy Tamer is stuck in your stomach because you will taste peppermint in the back of your throat.

Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux. HOWEVER! There are some people who have problems with the caps when they wait the full hour before they eat. If you previously took the cap on an empty stomach, and waited an hour before eating, and still had problems, you might be one of those people. In that case, try taking a cap on an empty stomach just 5-10 minutes before eating, and see if that works better for you.

Thank for posting my review, I SWEAR by your Tummy Fiber!!
I wanted to be sure I put up a review for Heather's Tummy Fiber, because ever since I found their web site all those years ago, Heather and her products gave me back my life. Doctors were of absolutely NO HELP! They don't care about it, they think it's just in our heads, and offered no help. Lots of useless tests of course, but no help. Well, I'm here to tell you, it's not in your head, it's real. I was lucky, although I've suffered with IBS for decades, I only needed the Tummy Fiber to set my life back on course. That and everything she writes about IBS. She explained it all! I've taken that fiber every day of my life for 11 years, and it makes all the difference in the world. You have to try different amounts, along with a balanced diet, to see what works best for you, but after you find your sweet spot, you should be pretty much good to go. So wonderful to be able to travel again, so good to be able to eat out and not fear needing a restroom, desperately 30 minutes after you eat. I know every available bathroom in town. I once tried to quit taking Heather's Fiber, and switched to one of the fiber solutions sold in the grocery stores, just for convenience! It took about 10 days, but the symptoms came roaring back. Won't be making that mistake again. I have tried to get local places in Austin to carry it, but can't get any interest (just like with doctors) So frustrating. Trust this product, it is worth EVERY penny, and worth ordering online-if you can't get it in your town. Thank you Heather for giving us this web site and all your products, recipes, and literature to learn how to live your life wonderfully, with IBS.

Can I ask what dose you started with and what dose you worked up to? It can take starting slowly, gradually increasing, and reaching a dose high enough for your symptoms to see the best results. Sometimes that takes just a week or so but for higher doses it can take several weeks to gradually get there.

I dont know what this product does but I can say that IT WORKS! I used it for the first time while on vacation. We ate out every night of the week while we were away. I always have stomach issues when eating out at restaurants but I literally had not one IBS symptom the whole week! I mixed the travel packs in with my drink before I ate dinner and drank a couple glasses of the peppermint tummy tea throughout the day. Maybe I just had a good week but I won't ever leave home without those two products! They have been great and I love telling everyone about Heathers products! Thank you.

Notice it doesn't really mix with cold water very well. It tends to get clumpy. Otherwise, it seems to help firm up loose stools, but I notice for myself, the dose can only be increased gradually, otherwise more bloating, etc. will occur. Overall though, a good product.

Hi Sue - thanks for your feedback! You are right, the acacia dissolves best in room temperature liquids, not very cold or very hot liquids. There is a trick though. If you dissolve the acacia first in just enough room temp liquid to get dissolved, you can then add the acacia liquid to hot or cold beverages.

And you are also right that you need to increase your dose gradually. That will get your gut used to more fiber (which is literally indigestible) without gas and bloating.

Hi Mary - For the Tummy Fiber Acacia to work properly, it's crucial that you start with a low dose (1/2 teaspoon twice daily) and gradually increase to a dose high enough to resolve symptoms (which may be 4-5 tablespoons a day for constipation, likely less than that for diarrhea). If you get gas or bloating, that would mean you increased your dose too quickly. It can take several weeks to gradually increase up to the dose you'd likely need to resolve constipation, and unfortunately you can't rush this. Tummy Fiber won't work overnight.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

I really feel for the constipation folks, as it takes some patience to start slowly, increase gradually, and eventually get your daily dose up high enough to resolve symptoms. A lower dose can't worsen constipation, but it won't resolve it, either. It sounds like you're on the right track with this, and it's a great sign that you are seeing improvements along the way.

Having the fiber at least twice a day - and you can have it more often - is also key, as you want to keep your gut filled with soluble fiber at all times. That will help prevent cramping and spasms in the first place.

I love this product & believe it is the best I have tried when trying to increase fiber. It is easy & portable! Wish it dissolved just a bit quicker... I put 1-2 packets in my 20oz water bottle, eventually it does & I wouldn't trade the convenience of the packets. I have the refillable container at home but this time when I re-order, I'm purchasing more of the packets because it is just easier to fill my water bottle with the packets... One question, I know you can bake with this, but what about adding it to Heather's Tea's? Is that an option?

Natural Soluble Fiber
It may be easier to use fiber tablets, but they don't have as much fiber and are more expensive. The only drawbacks are mixing this into liquids (it's like making flour thickener for gravy, liquid into the powder or you get lumps) and having to measure it out. I suggested they include a measuring scoop with the canister. I just keep a small plastic measuring spoon inside.

Great effective product!
I have battled diarrhea on and off for years. After numerous tests and scans Dr's have never officially diagnosed me with any specific cause. I discovered your website last fall after undergoing 3 cancer surgeries in one month. Having had my symptons under control for years with the use of probiotics, the heavy doses of antibiotics during those surgeries caused them to come roaring back. Great Idea!
I do quite a bit of air travel and had wondered about how to take my soluable fiber with me and not raise questions. A baggie full of white powder through security- not a good idea- So am very glad to have the travel packs-just went through security with them last week with no problems. Hi Becky!

I am so sorry to hear that you are having trouble with the Acacia Tummy Fiber.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). Since this may even be too much for you, try perhaps 1/4teaspoon (measuring spoon) twice a day. You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose)or even just 1/4 teaspoon if you are sensitive to it. If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn't take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Finding Heather's website was one of the best things that's ever happened to me. My IBS was getting to a point where I was nearly homebound. Everything I ate made me sick. I started taking an over the counter fiber, which helped a little, but the big warning on the label telling me I would probably choke to death kept me from taking the amount I needed and made me even more of a nervous wreck. I started taking Heather's acacia fiber when I saw that it didn't have choking properties. I got results almost immediately. Over time, I've been able to live much more normally (like most IBS sufferers, I haven't found a permanent solution yet). I can go out to eat more than five feet from my house, and I can take car trips (and even one plane trip) without suffering any problems. Although this isn't a magic powder that will solve IBS, it's the closest thing I've found.

Hi Gina - thank you so much for your feedback. You may want to use the Tummy Fiber in the canister or bulk refill pouch for your daily at-home fiber. This is the exact same fiber that's in the travel packets, but much more economical packaging. The travel packs are great for carrying with you and when you're out and about, but for use at home they are going to be more expensive than the can or pouch.

Constipation does often require the higher end of the dose range, up to 5 tablespoons daily. Try to gradually increase your dose and see if that gives you better resolution.

After having a bad attack of Diverticulitis, I began taking Tummy Fiber. I started off very slowly, adding a teaspoon every 5 days. I'm now up to 1 1/2 tablespoons a day. I no longer have bloating nor constipation. It has helped my intestines stabilize. Great product!

same effect as regular fiber
after 3 days of only 1/2 teaspoon twice daily I was so miserable with trapped gas and bloating it had to be stopped . Your peppermint oil was a miraculous cure after 2 weeks but had to be given up after 3 weeks since it was eating up my esophagus and stomach. It is very depressing after experiencing feeling normal for a week but I guess I'm done with Heather's.

I am so sorry that you are experiencing problems with the Acacia Tummy Fiber and the Peppermint Capsules. I am sure that if you stick with it, and continue using the Fiber, you will see results. It can take a while to build up to a resolving dose.

I've included some helpful information below on how the Tummy Fiber and Peppermint Capsules work, as well as methods for reducing your bloating and gas.

If you decide you do not want to use the Acacia Tummy Fiber/Peppermint Oil Capsules, you can return them opened or unopened for a refund.

Some people need to take a very small dose to start because their bodies are sensitive to fiber. Try taking just 1/4 measuring teaspoon twice a day. It may be that you just need to start at a very low dose.

Taking too much acacia too fast can cause increased gas and bloating. Acacia is one of the lowest gas-forming fibers out there and going slow makes the gas issue totally avoidable. Please be patient because this really does work.

We recommend starting with ½ teaspoon twice a day (daily dose of 1 teaspoon). You can split the daily dose up as many time as you like throughout the day, just divide it by 2 or 3 depending on the frequency you prefer. Try to increase the dose every 4th day or so by a teaspoon (add this to the daily dose). If you get increased gas and bloating by jumping the dose up by a teaspoon, try cutting this in half. Some people with IBS are so sensitive they have to go up at ¼ teaspoons every 4th day. Keep stepping up the dose every 4th day or so until you find a dose that resolves your constipation and/or diarrhea. Constipation is usually resolved with a daily dose of 4-5 tablespoons/day and diarrhea/loose stools usually resolves at a lower dose of 1-3 tablespoons/day. You shouldn’t take more than 5 tbsp/day. The maintenance dose is different for each person depending on their specific symptoms. Dietary changes are often necessary to make lasting changes. In the beginning until you stabilize, it works best to take the acacia before each meal to minimize the effect of trigger foods in the meal and to calm the intestines before the food arrives.

Peppermint is contraindicated for people with GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn. Many people with IBS often have these conditions, so we worked around it by enteric coating the peppermint oil capsules. This helps them to pass through the stomach without dissolving by making them resistant to the stomach acid. In fact, we doubled the enteric coating on our peppermint caps because we found it helped people with these conditions to be able to use them to manage their IBS without aggravating their upper GI issues.

However, some people with severe GERD/Reflux/chronic heartburn still have problems with the peppermint capsules because they will dissolve in the stomach before reaching the intestines. The antispasmodic effect you want to happen in your intestines will then occur in the stomach and this relaxes the sphincters at the top of the stomach. If this happens, it can lead to heartburn.

There are a few things we have found that help to prevent this from happening:

1) Take the peppermint capsules on an empty stomach an hour before the meal to allow them time to reach the intestines and dissolve before the food arrives. Taking them too close to meal time can be problematic for people with reflux.

2) The peppermint caps should not be taken during or after a meal because the food will block them from reaching the intestines and this could cause them to dissolve in the stomach.

3) Drinking only enough liquid to swallow the capsules seems to help them pass through without dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coating makes them resistant to stomach acid, but they are still water soluble. Limiting the amount of liquid they’ll be floating around in will help them reach their destination.

4) You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any medication (prescription or over-the-counter) designed to lower the stomach acid. Lowering the stomach acid makes the enteric coating less likely to work (remember it is resistant to high acid). For folks who need to take these medications, what we came up with is taking the peppermint caps about an hour before you take the acid lowering/blocking medication. This will give them a better chance of making it down to the intestines where they will dissolve and start to take effect without affecting the upper GI.

The Acacia Fiber is an essential part of my IBS management. I occasionally resort to a stronger laxative, but Heather's can be used on a daily basis. It is so gentle.
