Enteric coated peppermint oil capsules, as part of the diet, have been clinically proven to help prevent IBS symptoms, even in children. A Phytomedicine survey of 16 clinical trials declared peppermint capsules the approach "of first choice" for IBS patients.
Peppermint oil is exceptionally beneficial for IBS abdominal pain and spasms, diarrhea, and urgency. By relaxing the gut it can also benefit constipation. Menthol and methyl salicylate, the main active ingredients of pure mentha piperita peppermint oil, have calming effects on the stomach and intestinal tract.
Although peppermint is such a powerful smooth muscle relaxant that it can trigger heartburn in people who are susceptible, Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil Caps use a very special inherently enteric gelatin shell so they do not dissolve in the stomach. Instead, they pass through the digestive tract intact until they reach the intestines. For this reason, Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil Caps are often very helpful for people with both reflux and IBS who cannot tolerate peppermint in other forms (such as teas or foods).
Fennel is a carminative, it helps relax the gut, regulates contractions of the small intestine, and aids bloating and gas. Fennel also relaxes the gut, which can relieve spasms of the GI tract.
Ginger contains powerful digestive enzymes, and is helpful for a wide variety of gastrointestinal ailments, particularly nausea.
Heather's Tummy Tamers Peppermint Oil Capsules are considered a medical food, and they are specially formulated to address global IBS symptoms through the synergistic effects of peppermint, fennel, and ginger oils.
A 2018 survey of clinical trials declared peppermint oil capsules the approach "of first choice" for IBS patients with constipation or diarrhea, to alleviate general symptoms, and to improve quality of life.
While there are several different brands of peppermint oil capsules on the market, Tummy Tamers are the only ones formulated specifically for the special needs of people with IBS. How do we do this?
Our first concern is that people with IBS are statistically more prone to heartburn, and peppermint is contraindicated for people with heartburn, GERD, and reflux. We have tried very hard to work around this problem, however.
The Tummy Tamers capsules use a special patented enteric gelatin shell, which allows them to pass through the stomach without dissolving until they reach the small intestines. This enteric gelatin is resistant to stomach acid.
In fact, we are the only peppermint oil capsule manufacturer that uses enteric gelatin, so that as many people as possible are able to use them for IBS without aggravating any upper GI issues.
Second, we formulated Tummy Tamers to contain not just peppermint oil but fennel and ginger oils as well.
Clinical studies have shown that peppermint oil is exceptionally beneficial for IBS abdominal pain and spasms, diarrhea, and urgency (and it will NOT worsen constipation). Fennel is a carminative, it helps relax the gut, regulates contractions of the small intestine, and aids bloating and gas. Plus, it's known to have a calming effect on the bowel. Ginger contains powerful digestive enzymes and has historically been used as a digestive aid, for stomach issues, gas, and nausea.
In addition, both fennel and ginger are traditional remedies for heartburn. Together with the peppermint oil in the Tummy Tamers, they have a synergistic effect on global IBS symptoms without the heartburn risk of peppermint alone.
I first learned about enteric peppermint oil capsules for IBS over twenty years ago.
I was doing research for the first edition of my First Year IBS book.
I would have given anything to just take a pill and head off the blinding pain and spasms that hit me with IBS attacks.
So I started trying them cautiously, in situations where I knew I'd need extra help.
Before restaurant meals, first thing in the morning if I had to get up early, when I had my period, you know the drill. And they worked.
I began to rely on them regularly, carrying them with me in case I needed to eat out. I kept a bottle by my bed so I could remember to take one last thing at night before work mornings.
But before I wrote about them in my book and actually recommended them to other folks with IBS, I wanted to put them to the test.
I love the century old fairgrounds, the rides at night, the farm animals, the giant pumpkin growing contest. And the food.
It's actually a miracle I haven't ever had an IBS attack at the fair. Especially considering I've gone every autumn of my life, from kindergarten on, and for years I had no idea what foods would help me and what foods would hurt.
So – here I am at the fair twenty years ago, determined to personally give peppermint oil capsules the IBS challenge.
And I have to confess I'm genuinely worried because the stakes are so high. Another confession - worried is not the right word.
I'm thinking to myself, this is a really stupid move, Heather.
But - I had gained confidence by that point. I'd been getting real help from those little capsules, they'd been keeping me stable in situations with unavoidable triggers.
Splurging with known triggers? What if I even deliberately overused them? What were the consequences?
I took the plunge. My husband jokes that I took one for the team.
I doubled up the dose and took two caps at a time (don't be me!)
I took them just a few minutes before I ate instead of waiting 30-60 minutes (don't be me!)
At one point while walking through the horse barn I actually felt like I was breathing peppermint and then I suddenly burped a giant cloud of mint.
(Can't say I was surprised, as I was taking so many of them and not following the directions at all.)
I was basically trying to overwhelm my gut with those peppermint oil capsules so my IBS wouldn't stand a chance in the face of them.
And it worked.
I never doubled over with cramps. I didn't ever have to rush/stagger to the bathroom, hoping I'd make it before I blacked out from pain.
I had a glorious time at the fair that day.
I can still feel the sun on my face from the afternoon, and I can still taste those scones. From that day on peppermint oil capsules were a daily weapon in my IBS arsenal.
One huge caveat here – I am not prone to heartburn, GERD, reflux, or any other upper GI issues at all. I never have any side effects from peppermint in any form. Not everyone has my peppermint tolerance. Directions for use should be respected, not blatantly disregarded. Again, don't be me!
Especially when used as needed, and taken right before there may be gut troubles brewing.
In fact, they are so helpful that I made peppermint oil capsules one of my flagship medical foods for IBS.
We formulated Heather's Tummy Tamers with a special blend of peppermint, fennel, and ginger oils as enteric softgels specifically for preventing IBS symptoms.
Because if an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, then peppermint oil capsules weigh a ton.
In fact, peppermint oil includes more than 300 chemical compounds. And this can hold true for Washington peppermint oil despite annual fluctuations in the crop.
Researchers discovered that peppermint is a long-day plant that produces its greatest yields in geographical zones with a photoperiod of sixteen to eighteen hours.
Researchers also found that peppermint plants metabolized nitrogen into a variety of different compounds depending on that day length.

Trouble with GERD | |
I tried the Tummy Tamers years ago and found I couldn't take them. Fast-forward many years, and I decided to try them again, that perhaps I hadn't followed the directions carefully enough. A single dose let me know that I still couldn't take them because they cause severe acid reflux that lasted the entire day (after taking one in the morning). I had really hoped they would work this time.

Best defense BEFORE an IBS attack!
I've been following Heather for many years. I daily drink one cup ( or more) of her teas with 1 fennel & 1 peppermint tea bag. I love the taste of the 2 mixed together. Both my daughter & I take these peppermint capsules before each meal. I will take 2 if I'm going out to eat or a meal with possible triggers. She is very knowledgeable & her tips are very helpful. Her recipes are delicious.
